What is Cholesterol? Cholesterol is a type of animal fat (lipid) that is part of many important physiological processes. Our liver produces the amount needed for the body and additional amounts are also received through food. If cholesterol is in excess it accumulates on the inner walls of the arteries, which is a significant cardiovascular risk factor.
With our current eating habits, people have considerably increased the amount of energy, and especially saturated fats, they consume. These fats raise total cholesterol and especially LDL (bad) cholesterol, endangering the nutritional balance. According to the leading medical associations, high levels of cholesterol in the blood along with physical inactivity and alcohol and tobacco etc. consumption, are the highest risk factors in the development of cardiovascular disease, causing over half of all deaths in industrialised countries.
