Leaders, also in sugar reduction

Central Lechera Asturiana’s strategy for promoting healthy habits is global. That’s why it offers natural products with no artificial additives, with clear and healthy labels and with the best possible nutritional profile. Thanks to this, Central Lechera Asturiana enjoys the trust of consumers, like you, who enjoy a quality and health guarantee in its products.

Central Lechera Asturiana is the leading brand in sales in the dairy sector and it is proud to have also been a leader in adapting to the AECOSAN (Spanish Consumer, Food Safety and Nutrition Agency) “Collaboration Plan for improved food and beverage composition and other measures 2017-2020” to reduce the sugar content in food.

The former Ministry of Health, Consumption and Social Welfare, through AECOSAN and under consideration of the NAOS strategy (Strategy for Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity Prevention), took the initiative to involve the food industry in a commitment to recommendations (not mandatory) for reducing sugars in certain products. The deadline was 2020.

Reformulated products

Milkshakes and yogurts, improved ranges

Central Lechera Asturiana understands that its duty as a food industry is to raise awareness and inform and educate consumers about having a healthy diet. Therefore, in 2017 and with the forthcoming years of the objectives established in the national plan, Central Lechera Asturiana reformulated all products with added sugars; especially yogurts and milkshakes.

Sugar content in milkshakes has been reduced by up to 30%. Today, its 100% natural milkshakes are made with 90% semi-skimmed milk and 5% cane sugar so that you can enjoy chocolate, vanilla and now also Lacasitos and Conguitos flavours with peace of mind. Deliciously natural!

Its yogurt range has also been improved since 2017 to reduce the amount of added sugars by up to 56%, up to a maximum of 5% in its flavoured yogurts, 0% fat yogurts and fruit yogurts. A commitment that Central Lechera Asturiana has increased more recently with launches in recent years.

The only flavoured yogurts with no added sugars or sweeteners

In 2019, Central Lechera Asturiana was the first to launch a range of classic flavoured yogurts on the market with no sugars or sweeteners and, of course, with 100% natural ingredients. A range tested by its R&D+i, Nutrition and Innovation departments to achieve the best nutritional profile.

Available in strawberry, lemon, fruit salad and coconut flavours, its new yogurts are the result of the close collaboration between its Nutrition and Innovation departments to create a new line of products that Central Lechera Asturiana will continue to promote in the future.

With no artificial additives and with 5% sugar

Central Lechera Asturiana takes pride in partnering with brands that understand and share its philosophy. That is why it joined Chocolates Lacasa in 2019 to launch its Lacasitos and Conguitos milkshakes made with 90% Central Lechera Asturiana milk, 5% cane sugar and with no artificial E-s.

As always since 2017, also in the Lacasitos and Conguitos milkshakes, Central Lechera Asturiana has achieved a product with the best possible nutritional profile. They therefore have less sugar than other milkshakes on the market.

Central Lechera Asturiana works hand in hand with Chocolates Lacasa to develop specific bases for these products for the first time, with no artificial ingredients, which Central Lechera Asturiana has incorporated in a stable manner and with no additives to its best Skimmed Milk.

Lactose, a 100% natural sugar

Why does Central Lechera Asturiana emphasise “added” sugars? Because milk and all the foods that Central Lechera Asturiana makes with it have sugar naturally. It’s about lactose. In every 100 ml of freshly milked milk there is 4.6% or 4.6 grams of lactose and that’s why in the nutritional information of its products with no added sugar you will see this amount, or an approximate amount, and which is referenced as “carbohydrates,” in the form of “sugars.”

Lactose favours calcium absorption, which is why milk and dairy products are considered so important to ensure calcium levels in the human body. This is a fermentable sugar, which is why it is also present in fermented dairy products, such as yogurt and, to a lesser extent, cheese. Cheese loses a large amount of lactose during the production process, which is why it is the dairy product that people with lactose intolerance tolerate best.
